BlackWatch Backcoating

The nonconductive media in this innovative cartridge provides very high performance. But without a conductive surface, static can accumulate to levels high enough to threaten your data. That's why Black Watch SD-3 cartridges feature 3M™ Black Watch™ Backcoating. This high-quality backcoating dissipates static, to help protect your data and your equipment. And 3M is uniquely qualified to deliver this protection. We invented backcoating to give our tapes a performance edge. Now, the latest high-density metal particulate formulations require backcoating -- and 3M has more than 30 years of experience with backcoatings.

Proven Helical scan recording technology
SD-3 technology is the third generation of helical recording technology. Compared to previous generations, SD-3 drives have up to nine times less tape tension. Combined with advanced Black Watch SD-3 tape, this provides nearly fifty times greater durability.

Precision Tape Spool
Black Watch tape cartridges incorporate a new precision tape spool design. This improved spool ensures that tape winds more evenly. Together with the textured backcoat, it improves tape stacking and reduces edge damage. And reduced edge damage will reduce the number of single track errors by up to 72% on the first track of tape.

Durability
Even in constant operation, laboratory testing indicates that 3M™ Black Watch™ SD-3 Tape Cartridges will last three and a half years.

The unique weld used in the FlashGard welding process makes the shell ultra-strong and highly resistant to breakage. And tat stronger shell means your data is better protected.

Reduced flash for greater data safety
Other cartridges can leave "flash" or weld debris inside the shell. 3M's FlashGard weld is a "wall within a wall" that traps flash and keeps it away from the tape pack and away from your data

Leader Block
New, two-sided leader block tension spring is imbedded in cartridge, ensuring consistent performance even if cartridge is dropped or damaged.

Write-Protect padlock
Easy-to-understand padlock symbol identifies the write-protect status of the cartridge at a glance.

Optimum tape path
Leader block on left hand side of cartridge provides shorter tape path for smoother operation.

Media identification label
A separate recessed label area accommodates the single-digit Media Identification Label.

ID blocks
Color-coded ID blocks make cartridge easy for operator to recognize. The recognition notches automatically identify the tape length and write protect status of the SD-3 cartridge to the drive.

The metal particulate media used in the 3M™ Black Watch™ SD-3 Tape Cartridge features smaller, more densely packed particles that allow precise, high-density formatting and long-lasting, high-quality recording. This high-coercivity MP media is designed specifically for use with SD-3 technology.
